Laughing Goat Fiber is a family owned farm with fiber goats, sheep and alpacas, located just 4 miles from downtown Ithaca, NY, about a 10 minute drive from Cornell’s campus. We are offering 2-4 part-time unpaid apprenticeships for the Spring 2010. Hours are flexible but would be primarily afternoons, evenings and weekends and we’re looking for a 4-10 hr/week commitment. We can structure the farm visits to fit around other commitments you may have. The goal is to make it realistic, fun, educational and motivational. We’ll show you what we love about this job.
Some of the activities that apprentices can learn from and be involved in are animal chores such as feeding; moving pasture; hoof trimming; and checking for parasites. Also, general farm chores involving fence repair or install; planning and assisting with farm tours; building hay feeders, paths and raised beds; moving manure/compost; among others. Depending on equipment and the weather, we can also work on washing, carding, spinning, dyeing and some small weaving projects with the fiber from these wonderful, amusing animals.
